Low Emission Zone - Wikivoyage, the free collaborative travel and tourism guide - Zone à faible émission — Wikivoyage, le guide de voyage et de tourisme collaboratif gratuit

A low emission zone, also referred to by the acronym LEZ, is an urban area where the most polluting vehicles, not responding to a certain Euro standard, are prohibited from driving or must discharge a right to enter and to move there.

Such zones exist more and more in Europe, fourteen countries have them. The organization and regulation of these zones may be a national competence, as in Germany or in France, regional as in federated entities of Belgium or even communal as in London.

Germany

Since 2008, more and more cities have an ecological zone (Umweltzone). Only vehicles with an eco-sticker (Umweltplakette) can circulate in these environmental zones. This regulation also applies to foreign visitors.

  • Affected vehicles : passenger cars; minibuses, motor homes and vans; coaches; trucks.
  • Exempt vehicles : scooters, mopeds and motorcycles; vintage cars; vehicles fitted with a European disabled parking card.

Control

The check is carried out by means of a colored sticker to be affixed to the lower right corner of the windscreen.
