Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (in Italian; The most beautiful countries of France) is an association, founded in 1982, which aims to promote the tourist attractions of small rural municipalities that have a rich historical, artistic or naturalistic heritage. To increase the credibility and legitimacy of the brand it confers on the basis of a rigorous investigation, the association has set itself very strict selection criteria.
By grouping the villages whose population does not exceed 2000 inhabitants and placing the sites of naturalistic, artistic or historical interest under protection, the association was thus able to create a map of the most beautiful villages that includes the current municipalities and has several thousand members.
The membership criteria established by the association are many and rigid: to the three basic criteria:
- population less than 2000 inhabitants
- collective membership of the municipality
- possession of at least two sites of interest
The choice of a landscape protection policy is essentially added, which must materialize in the general regulatory plan (in French, plan d'occupation des sols), which must effectively limit construction and prevent any installation that is harmful to the overall aesthetics of the country. This policy may be in contrast with some choices of economic development, but it assures to the countries complying with the criteria a greater and more and more sought after tourist presence.
