There are 104 Nature parks in Germany (As of early 2013), their areas added together make up about 25% of the total area of Germany. The oldest park is the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park (founded in 1921), the largest is the Black Forest Middle / North Nature Park (3750 km²).
background
The nature parks are regulated in Federal Nature Conservation Act: they should be spacious, consist mainly of landscape / nature reserves and - in addition to the benefits for the environment and regional development - are particularly suitable for recreation and especially for sustainable tourism. That makes them a worthwhile travel destination.
The Association of German Nature Parks (VDN) represents the interests of the nature parks website you can find a lot more information about the individual parks. In 2013 the association celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Besides the nature parks, there are also those in Germany National parks, Nature reserves, landscape protection areas and biosphere reserves. Together they are under the umbrella brand National natural landscapes summarized.
