National parks usually form the highest level of protection for natural areas that are usually in government hands. An infrastructure for sustainable tourism is usually associated with the status.

National parks have in Germany a relatively new tradition, measured against countries such as the United States of America (1864 and 1872) and Australia (1979). Only one park has been dissolved so far: The Elbtalaue National Park.
