The early settlement finds lead back to the year 1000 BC. BC back. Further finds can prove a settlement up to the year 900 AD. But this place was rather small and was always a loyal ally of Tikal. In the post-classical period from 900 AD, however, the site began to flourish when it became the center of the Ko'Woj. These became close to the Cocomes dynasty in Mayapán said. Unlike this, Ixlú could exist until the arrival of the Spaniards and was the penultimate Mayan city to be captured by the Spaniards. The last one was undoubtedly the one 23 km away Tayasal in the urban area of today's Flores.

About 150 structures have been discovered here, most of which are from the post-classical period. The "Templo de las Vasijas Escondidas" is the most famous building.
