background

This somewhat smaller Mayan city had its heyday during the classical period between the 7th and 9th centuries. The population was no more than 2000, and the city was probably under the influence of Uxmal. And yet some architectural masterpieces have been created here. In 1842 the facility was rediscovered by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood. Above all, the drawings of the archway made these ruins famous overnight.
