Map of Mayapán

background

The name Mayapán means something like "among the Maya". Although the place had probably been settled for a long time, the city was only founded in 1007 AD. From then on, the place represented the capital of the Cocomes dynasty. Belonging to the religion of the Kukulcán faith, the city joined the so-called city union, which also Uxmal and Chichen Itza belonged to. But towards the end of the 12th century there were tensions and armed conflicts within the federal government, which ended with the complete devastation of Chichén Itza by Mayapán. After the fall of Chichén Itzá, Mayapán assumed dominance over the region for over 250 years. Around 15,000 inhabitants found their home here in 3500 buildings when it flourished. But this was not without tension with the surrounding tribes. The neighboring Xiú moved their capital from Uxmal to just 30 km away Maní. From there, the city of Mayapán was attacked, completely destroyed and then abandoned. Incidentally, the Cocomes fled and were only finally defeated by the Xiús in an alliance with the Spaniards.
