Utatlan is a Maya ruin in Highlands of Guatemala.
background
This city was founded as the third capital (after Jakawitz and Pismachi ') by the K'iche' in the 15th century. Previously, with some allies, they had brought the entire highlands under their control. The K'iche 'always asserted the direct descendants of the Toltecs Tula to be. But culture and language speak against it. Just 80 words in common usage were not derived from the Maya language but from the central Mexican Nahuatl. In 1463 AD there was a revolt of the allied Kaqchiquel, in the course of which they moved out and their own capital Iximché founded. The attempt to militarily put them in their place in 1491 AD failed. On the contrary, important elite members were captured by the Kaqchiquel. So the K'iche 'lost their status of invincibility. There were riots all over the empire and while the K'iche 'were busy trying to get them under control, the Kaqchiquel formed an alliance with the Spaniards who arrived in 1524. They were invited to Utatlán and came. But they sensed the ambush and razed the city to the ground. Only a few ruins were left behind.
