background
After most of the centers in the region had been abandoned or at least lost their influence in the late Classical period, a new city was founded here whose architecture and location could meet the new challenges. This location was on two important trade routes and - supported by a wall - was easy to defend. Archaeological finds indicate that not only Maya but also a multitude of cultures gathered in this city. But after not much more than a century, the city was overrun by strangers and burned to the ground. The city was then abandoned and forgotten. As early as 1929, sculptures of jaguars were found here during excavations. Such sculptures were last discovered again in 2013.
