One UNESCO World Heritage recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO for short) as a place or places with common characteristics. These sites can be forests, mountains, lakes, deserts, buildings, architectural complexes or cities, etc., nominated by countries participating in the World Heritage Convention for the International Heritage Program World Heritage Site, recognized for its special cultural or physical significance and managed by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. There are several related UNESCO programs:

UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, for things that cannot be touched such as musical or culinary traditions
UNESCO Creative Cities, describing a recently instituted program identify entire cities for cultural contributions
UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, for parks of great geological interest.
